It's common to notice constipation when you make big changes to your diet, such as starting the Second Nature programme. This tends to resolve within a few days once the body adapts.

On a lower-carbohydrate diet, the sodium (salt) balance in your body will change and the altered fluid balance can contribute to constipation. Making sure you drink at least two litres (8 glasses) of water can really help to improve symptoms. Carrying a drink bottle and having one glass of water at each meal can help with this.

It can also help to keep active and do some exercise, as this will get the gut moving and alleviate symptoms of constipation. A light walk or a yoga workout could be a good option.

If your constipation is ongoing and doesn't resolve within a few weeks, we'd suggest checking in with your GP.
